Review: DHB Active Padded Bib Shorts
DHB is a UK brand of cycling clothing that retail on Wiggle and provide cycle clothing for beginners right up to professional level riders.
These bib shorts are part of the Active range. The Active range is designed for new or beginner level riders who are relatively new to cycling or who want to try it out. The range is designed with comfort and value in mind and uses simple manufacturing to achieve great value clothing that is also functional.
The bibshorts are padded with a single density, thermoformed pad which promotes comfort on the bike by cushioning your sit bones and providing support where needed. The pad also prevents chafing between your legs which is essential for remaining comfortable on any ride.
DHB recommend the Active bib shorts for short rides or commutes of up to 1-2 hours, but we have worn them comfortably on rides of up to 3 hours without any discomfort or problems with them.
The grippers on the legs function well and prevented the shorts riding up, although the bib straps themselves are a little thin which means they tend to move around your shoulder a little. Although this isn’t a problem that can’t be solved with a simple readjustment, on longer rides where you may be in and out of the saddle this could get frustrating. Again these are a beginner level short so are designed for short rides and commutes.
The shorts are very comfortable to wear but are also very thin with just the one pieces of lycra material making up the shorts. This means these shorts are good for summer rides but on chilly mornings or late evening rides it may be wise to wear tights over them or switch them for some more padded options. DHB do offer a range of padded bibshorts and tights that will perform well in colder weather.
The DHB Active shorts fit really well and there is no discomfort whilst wearing them, the flatlock stitching in the seams making them comfortable and reduces friction against the skin whilst moving. The shorts needed little adjustment whilst on the bike with just the occasional strap adjustment necessary.
These shorts are available in three colours: red, blue and black. The blue and red options are very bright and will make you stand out in traffic which is ideal for commuters, although some may prefer the more subtle appearance of the black version.
They have the DHB logo on the lower back, although we have noticed that after a few washes the logo does begin to fade and peel a little.
The DHB Active Padded Bib Shorts are a great purchase for the beginner or novice cyclist. They are comfortable and perform exceptionally well for their price range; but if you want to participate in longer rides then we would recommend choosing a higher quality short with more panels and a higher grade chamois.
The red and blue versions can currently be bought at the frankly unbelievable price of £7.00 in Wiggle’s clearance sale; with the black versions retailing at £17.99.
