Tour of Britain 2017: Gaviria Wins Stage 4

Fernando Gaviria won Stage 4 of the 2017 Tour of Britain in the bunch sprint, beating Viviani on the line in another photo finish on the race.

Gaviria managed to beat Viviani on the line to win the stage but the Team Sky rider’s consistency over the opening days of the race sees him move back into the green leaders jersey, taking it from Caleb Ewan even though they are both on the same time.

The day’s rainy start in Mansfield didn’t put the riders off from attempting a flurry of attacks to breakaway in the early km with a group of five riders going clear after 13km of racing, including Mark McNally (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Jacob Scott (AnPost-Chain Reaction), Alistair Slater (JLT-Condor) and Alexandre Blain and Richard Handley (Madison Genesis).

The leaders managaed to maintain a lead of around 3’30” for most of the day as McNally went about collecting as many sprint points as possible, moving level with Graham Briggs (JLT-Condor) at the end of the stage although Briggs will retain the sprinters jersey on countback.

The peloton was being controlled by a variety of teams with no one team taking control, Dimension Data, Katusha-Alpecin and Team Sky all being in the mix. On the final climb there was an attack from Scott who managed to take the full compliment of mountain points at the top of the Cat3 Eaton Wood climb to move into the lead by 1 point ahead of Briggs in the mountain classification.

With 10km to go the peloton were still 1′ ahead and it looked like they might stand a chance of making it to contest the finish between them, but an injection of pace from Sky, Orica-Scott and LottoNL-Jumbo soon saw the gap drop dramatically and the break was caught with 3km left to race.

There were several teams vying for position in the final km but it was Quick-Step who were able to wrestle control away from the other teams for long enough to set up Gaviria who won with a well-timed bike throw on the line.
